THE ASSOCIATION OF PARKS IN BULGARIA
The Association of Parks in Bulgaria is NGO established for implementing
activities for public benefit. It was established on January 28th, 2003
in Sofia. At present 10 of a total of 13 operating park administrations in
Bulgaria are members of the Association. Currently the Association is
presided by Vitosha Nature Park Directorate.
Main objective of the Association is development of the system of
Bulgarian protected areas and conservation of biological and landscape
diversity, cultural and spiritual heritage of Bulgarian parks.
The activities of the association so far were focused on the institutional
strengthening of the park administrations, training of the staff and creating
group identity of Bulgarian parks.
The Association has prepared ToRs for management plans of 38 protected
areas (including 4 Nature Parks) comprising 12% of the territory of
protected areas in Bulgaria. As separate projects, the Association has
established an Interpretation Centre for people with disabilities and
educational path in sphagnum bogs area in Vitosha Nature Park. The
Association has also prepared a concept for the development of the
biosphere reserves in Bulgaria and a system for assessment of the
effectiveness of protected areas management.
Among the organisations that gave credence and funded the Association are: the
European Comission, PHARE Programme, the Canadian Agency for Development,
Whitley Laing Foundation, Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation, Ministry of
Agriculture and Forests, Ministry of Environment and Waters, European Action
Fund EECONET, WWF – DCP, WWF- Germany etc. |
